Set your ceiling fan counterclockwise in summer and clockwise in winter. The direction switch sits on the motor housing and takes five seconds to flip. Get it wrong and your fan fights against you every season.
I ran a fan the wrong way for an entire summer before a friend pointed it out. The room felt stuffy no matter what speed I picked. One flip of the switch and the difference was immediate.
Steps
- Turn the fan off completely. Pull the chain or flip the wall switch until the blades stop spinning. Wait for the blades to come to a full halt. You cannot safely reach the direction switch while the blades are moving.
- Locate the direction switch. Grab a step stool and look at the top of the motor housing. The switch is a small toggle or sliding switch on the side or top of the housing. Some newer fans hide it behind a removable cover on the motor.
- Flip it counterclockwise for summer. Set the switch so the blades spin counterclockwise when you look up at them. This pushes air straight down and creates a wind chill effect on your skin. That moving air can make a room feel up to 4 degrees cooler. Crank the speed to high for maximum cooling.
- Flip it clockwise for winter. Set the switch the other way so the blades spin clockwise. This pulls cool air up toward the ceiling and pushes warm air out along the walls and down. Run the fan on low speed in winter. High speed creates a draft that ruins the warming effect.
- Verify the airflow direction. Turn the fan on low and stand directly under it. In summer mode, you should feel a strong breeze pushing down on you. In winter mode, you should feel almost no air movement at the floor level. If you feel a draft in winter mode, lower the speed.
- Adjust the blade pitch if needed. Some fans have a switch to change the blade angle for different seasons. Check the manual if your fan has this option. Most modern fans handle both directions with a single button.
I switch my fans twice a year when I change the clocks for daylight saving. That rhythm makes the schedule impossible to forget.
